Ways to Create a More Welcoming Kitchen During Your Remodel

Posted on

The kitchen provides the space in many homes where people gather to cook, chat and socialize. Thus, bear this in mind when renovating, and focus on ways to make the kitchen ultra welcoming, allowing everyone to enjoy the space even more. Following are several tips on how to go about this.

Natural Light

Rooms filled with natural daylight create a pleasant open space, encouraging people to relax. Conversely, dark and cramped rooms feel less enjoyable. So, during the remodel, focus on building avenues that allow for extra light to come inside.

A simple option is to check the foliage outside the kitchen window, whether it's blocking the light and needs a trim. Or else, depending on the kitchen layout, you may be able to construct a window backsplash if it sits on an outside wall. Because of its unusual elongated shape, a clear splashback will give your kitchen a unique look. Plus, you'll be able to prepare food easily on a bright and open countertop. A skylight or solar tube is a different possibility that creates an extra overhead pathway to natural lighting.

Organic Materials

Another way to create more inviting custom kitchens is to load them with natural and organic surfaces. Timber flooring and counters give a warm, homey glow. A wooden benchtop —  full of textures and multi-tones — is also a great way to add an accent against uniformly coloured cabinetry and splashbacks.

As well, you could install a natural stone counter or floor tiles. What about a warmly speckled granite benchtop, in browns, yellows, and tans? Alternatively, cover the floor in gorgeous slate tiles. To maintain a light ambience, though, balance the slate with pale coloured surfaces in other areas that will help bounce light and keep the room feeling airy.

Kitchen Island

A layout feature that helps to create a more social and inviting space is a kitchen island. They particularly help the designated chef. While food is being prepared, family and friends can pull up stools and gather around the island to chat and keep the cook company. Though, make sure that the island counter has an overhang to create space for everyone's legs. You could also add convenient storage. For instance, build a wine rack into the island. If your kitchen doesn't have space for an island, you could achieve similar effects with a peninsula that branches out from the perimeter counters.
