Tips on Proper Use of Skip Bins

Posted on

Skip bins are very useful tools when it comes to management of waste. Since the waste kept inside these bins must be properly handled, it is important to be aware of some of the ways that can help you ensure that all your waste is removed in a safe and efficient manner.

Here are a couple of essential things every residential or commercial property owner should know about before hiring skip bins.

Placement

Whenever possible, skip bins should always be placed on the property of the hirer. If they must be placed on the road, then a local council permit must be acquired. In this case, the local council will stipulate how the skip bin should be placed on the road.

For example, the council may require that skip bins should not obstruct access to emergency services, e.g. fire hydrants. Also, they may instruct that the waste kept inside the skip bin must not cause bad smells, e.g. as is the case with some organic waste, which often becomes rotten.

Overfilling

Skip bins come in different sizes, so that you can always find a unit (or units) that will be appropriate for carrying all your waste. Skip bin users who underestimate the volume of waste generated end up filling the available bins more than is required. The same applies to price-savvy bin users who want to take advantage of any possible loophole to save a few dollars.

Skip bins filled above top level will make it impossible to close lids on top of the bins, allowing waste items to clutter all over the same area you want to clear of waste. Overfilled skip bins can also cause waste to be blown away as it is being transported, creating road safety hazards. Make sure your skip bins are not filled above top level to avoid these problems.

Markings

Transportation of waste with skip bins is often considered as dangerous transportation because the loaded bins pose road safety risks that must be mitigated. When the skip bins are being transported, reflective marking tape must be placed on each of the top corners of opposite ends of the skip bin facing oncoming traffic.

Besides ensuring the skip bins have sufficient reflective markings, illumination may be needed during the nighttime. Having flashing yellow lights fitted on the top corners of the skip bin can help improve visibility for approaching drivers when it is dark outside.
